I do my best to cultivate a strong therapeutic relationship based on respect, honesty and empathy, so that each person feels seen, heard, and valued. I work collaboratively with my clients to explore their concerns, to problem-solve, and to develop useful skills, with the goal of alleviating suffering and creating a more joyful and fulfilling life. I am an integrationist, meaning that I incorporate various psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and family systems approaches into the therapy in order to tailor it to each person’s specific needs. I work with adults, adolescents, children, couples and families of all genders and sexual orientations who are struggling with a wide variety of issues. Most commonly, I treat depression, anxiety/panic attacks, relationship problems, stress, struggles with coming out and with various life transitions, school and behavioral issues, parenting challenges, and ADHD.
I hold degrees from Columbia University (B.A.), Rutgers University—GSAPP (Psy.M. and Psy.D.) and completed my psychology internship as a Harvard Fellow at The Cambridge Hospital. I have specialized training and experience in EMDR (Parts I and II), in working with LGBTQIA clients/families, in crisis intervention, in play therapy and parenting issues, and I am Jewishly knowledgeable.
I take the mystery out of therapy by working collaboratively with you. My role then tends to be like a coach or instructor. We set goals together. We look for patterns in thinking, actions, and relationships that cause problems. We examine the positive and negative outcomes that cause people to get stuck in negative emotions. While we look to the past to learn how patterns are shaped, this treatment is present and future focused. It is more important to build on your strengths than to dwell on weaknesses. I have worked with children as young as two years old. I also see many teenagers as well as adults in hospice. Problems include tantrums, chronic illness, anxiety, hyperactivity, moodiness, depression, coping with divorce and grief. I treat individuals, couples and families. I have done medical letters of support for trans/nonbinary clients.
Psychology is my second career (after working as an author and book editor for several years), so I am familiar with what it’s like to consider major life transitions. I can help if you are feeling stuck or pondering a change in your life. Because I am a writer, I believe in the power of narrative and often incorporate this into therapy, including expressive writing and other creative approaches. I will help you look at your life as your own story and figure out how you can write the next chapter.
I primarily work with adults of all ages as well as older adolescents. My approach to therapy is to work collaboratively with you to figure out a path toward clarity, relief, and empowerment. I listen to each client and identify specifically what will help with the current issues that are getting in the way. Together, we will figure out a plan for treatment, shaping it as we go according to what you are looking for and how we are meeting the goals we set. My theoretical approach is integrative, meaning that I draw from various approaches to tailor the best plan to each individual I work with.
I have a passion for working with kids and families. I am fascinated with the ways kids communicate and love finding the best ways to connect. I enjoy partnering with kids and families to figure out the best ways to overcome behavioral and emotional difficulties so everyone can grow and flourish. When I work with adults, I partner with them to understand, process, and overcome difficulties and traumas they have experienced so they can productively move forward. My work is influenced by cognitive behavioral and family systems theories, and I utilize EMDR when appropriate.
I have experience treating a variety of clients from young children, teens, parents, and grandparents. I have assisted them through traditional treatment as well as custody evaluations, bonding evaluations, reunification therapy, and learning assessments. In treatment, I have used EMDR skills to treat high levels of anxiety. My experience with depression and other mood disorders has spanned almost 20 years of practice in psychology. I work collaboratively with my clients. There is no question or experience too big or small for us to examine and unlock together.
Since 2014, I have worked on the child study teams in the public-school systems. I enjoy explaining to parents and children how they best learn and what schools can do to help them achieve their goals. Watching parents and kids get a better understanding of how their brain works and they can use their strengths to balance out their challenges is essential to being a psychologist to me.
I specialize in learning evaluations, using IQ and Achievement tests. I also do ADD/ADHD assessments for adults and children. We also help with assessment required by insurance companies and address questions through testing about memory and clinical diagnosis.
