Bipolar Disorder causes people to feel depressed and manic

Some Symptoms that Might Indicate a Manic or Hypomanic Episode

  • Are you feeling unusually happy, optimistic and “on top of the world” ?
  • Have you been feeling unusually irritable for a week or longer? 
  • Has your body felt restless, struggling when needing to sit still?  Have you been pacing?
  • Have you noticed that you have disturbed sleep?
  • Have you been more talkative than usual?  Have you felt pressure to continue talking to the extent that others might have trouble participating in the conversation with you?
  • Has it seemed like your thoughts are racing, or like you keep jumping from topic to topic?
  • Have you noticed a significant increase in your planning for or participation in multiple activities lately? 
  • Have you been engaging in risky behaviors: buying sprees, reckless driving, sexual indiscretions, foolish business investments, or participating excessively in any other activities that are pleasurable but have a high potential for painful consequences?


Some Symptoms That Might Indicate a Depressive Episode

  • Do you feel sad/empty most of the day or nearly every day? 
  • Does it feel like the “taste” or “color” is missing from life?  
  • Is it an effort to do things that used to be fun or easy?          
  • Are you easily annoyed or irritable?              
  • Have you had thoughts of running away or disappearing/dying?     
  • Are you sluggish after only a few hours?                  
  • Do you feel worthless or guilty most days?  
  • Do you tend to think over and over again about flaws or problems?
  • Have you hurt yourself on purpose?                          
  • Do you have problems concentrating?                     
  • Do you eat, drink or smoke to sleep, wind-down, or feel better?
